Boatyard Field Trip

Do you ever wish you could meet someone else to talk boats? Other than Cedar Key and my friend Addison, I don’t have much of a social outlet for the pursuit of this crazy hobby. But today, I got to visit a fellow boat enthusiast in this on environment. His name is Bill Moffit. And he is an inveterate backyard boat builder/adventure sailing traveler on this highway of get-away fantasy. His project, a Mike’s Boat by Jim Michalak. Bill is building his project right behind his house. He is using building material from home depot; and the boat is looking just fabulous!

Bill is planning to sail his Mike’s Boat in the Texas 200, so we had lots of real-life plans to talk about. Bill is a mechanic. And as such he is very practical and creative. As we reviewed the plans for Mike’s Boat and compared his progress in plywood, memories of my fun times building my other boats came flooding back into my consciousness. Bill is doing a bang-up job and has a lot of great ideas for making his boat a practical camp cruiser. Please visit his boat building blog and enjoy his progress in the race to finish Mike’s Boat for the Texas 200 in June. Below are some pictures I took of Bill and his project.

Bill has a Woobo that he built and sails. His sons and he have also built a Slam Dink. So Bill knows his backyard building.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Bill. We will likely share ideas frequently.
